Kanishak Kataria IAS
In this post, we are going to talk about Kanishak Kataria who got All India Rank 1 in the UPSC Civil Service Exam 2018.
About Kanishak Kataria
Kanishak Kataria did his schooling from St. Paul's Sr. Secondary School School which is in Kota, Rajasthan.
Kanishak Kataria is an IITian (passed out of the 2014 batch) being B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering.
He did his internship as a Software Developer in Microsoft India.
Later he joined Samsung as Software Engineer and worked there for almost 2 years.
Before working for Samsung he gave his 1st attempt for UPSC prelims (which was unplanned) but didn't clear it.
In 2017 he came back to India and started his full-fledged preparation for UPSC CSE.
Kanishak Kataria UPSC CSE journey
According to Kanishak Kataria, one must sustain the whole lengthy preparation to succeed in this examination.
"A candidate should ask ownself, “Why does he/she want to become a Civil Servant?” The motivation should be internal, not external."
According to him one must always stay focused during preparation and avoid as much distraction as possible by the candidate.
One must not overthink about a particular situation which is not our hand for eg: this time cutoff will be high OR this time vacancies are less, etc.
"Control the controllable"
According to him, there's no study hour, one must make sure that Quality study is better than quantity studies (because no one is going to ask you how much books you read, it's always how well you read)
He said that whether the candidates should join a coaching or not it's his/her personal choice but one must always do self-study, in UPSC self-study is the key to success.
No coaching Institute has a magic stick and makes the selection possible. The candidate should try to improve day by day through daily practice.
Kanishak Kataria Prelims Strategy
Kanishak Kataria told that he met his friends who were already preparing for UPSC CSE and discussed with them how to approach UPSC and what strategy he should use.
He says he made his strategy according to his strengths and weaknesses, he didn't blindly copy others' strategy.
Kanishak says time management is very important for both prelims as well as mains if one can manage time properly half of the battle is already won.
One must not just prepare only for prelims (thinking I can clear mains within 4 months) equal time should be given to each of the 3 parts of a pattern (ie. Prelims, Mains + Optional).
He suggests to all UPSC aspirants to prepare the topic given in Syllabus thoroughly and strongly. Which means the aspirant should be able to attempt most answers right if the UPSC asks questions from a particular topic. The previous year UPSC prelims question papers will help you significantly in this area.
He says the prelims for CSE is just qualifying in nature and there is no point of overdoing it. The UPSC aspirants should take mock tests (according to one's will) before appearing in the IAS prelims exam.
Which will help to boost their confidence and practice of appearing in the exam and also in time management.
Kanishak Kataria Mains Strategy
Kanishak Kataria says answer writing practice is a very important part to clear the mains exam of UPSC.
One must strictly start doing answer writing practice of prelims.
An aspirant will improve in his answer writing if he practises it thoroughly (a good answer will help to fetch more marks than competitors).
Once the chosen optional subject is prepared perfectly, the candidates can only practice writing answers and prepare General Studies after the prelims exam.
He was confident about his optional subject i.e Mathematics. He suggests that the candidates be thorough with the subject they are opting for, one must not feel the chosen optional subject boring or burdensome.
To select optional takes the time of 1-2 weeks and make the final choice (based on the availability of books in your area, cost you can bear, etc) (rather than which optional everyone else is choosing).
He said that the answer writing practice even for optional subjects can fetch a good final score (so that you don't have to try hard in personality tests).

Kanishak Kataria notes making
He says that a UPSC aspirant must prepare his/her notes. Be it online or offline, it doesn't matter.
Kanishak Kataria says that while preparing notes; we do active learning which is not possible by just reading books written by authors (one must use his/her notes which should be brief to revise it again and again for the exam).
There are no good notes or bad notes, the notes can be improved over time. Do not wait to produce the perfect notes from the 1st day, instead start preparing the notes and update them according to your preferences. (Be it latest data, Current affairs, changes in regulation, etc).
To Conclude
Give time to yourself, your family and friends.
Kanishak Katrina said while taking a break he watches football and cricket matches so that he can be refreshed and get back to studies with a boost. He said the time for refreshment is very important to get back with full concentrations.
The candidates for sure should take a break from the studies once they feel bored. Such breaks will increase their efficiency and boost your preparation.
